Evaluation

I was instructed to create a college magazine front cover and a draft of a contents page. However this front of the magazine had to be appropiate and promote the college in a good way. To start of I did some research on the college I would Be promoting for which is 'Wyke college.' After this I compared two already existing college magazines front covers and analyzed them, this helped me with ideas for own and made me realised whats not good to put on the front of the magazine.
After comparing my two magazines I decided to start doing some drafting of my magazine front cover. I made two drafts of possible places I could put pictures, head-mast, dates etc. After this I did the draft for my contents page, after looking at many other contents pages I made the draft layout very similar to other college magazines. After my drafting process I came up with names for the magazine. I thought of four possible names: Colmag, The Term mag, The Shout Out and The WM. All the name4s were appropriate for different reasons but I thought the best choice would be 'The Shout Out!' as its enthusiastic, friendly towards young audiences and suitable for a college magazine. After this I took pictures for the front cover of the magazine, I initially decided on a female model but because their is uneven ratio of females to males at wyke I thought it would be a good idea to use a male as a model as it promotes that the college is friendly towards males. I had many of places to choose from to take pictures of the model but I took them on the outside. This is so it can show of the buildings in the background and still have that educational look to it. Once I had taken my photos I chose the most effective and best to use for the front cover.
The picture I chose was perfect because it represented the magazine perfectly and the ideology of the magazine. The image I used was my model reading the Wyke planner sat down, with in the background the buildings of wyke. In the image the model is smiling. This makes the language of the magazine very positive, because he is smiling it shows he is happy and perhaps due to success which is what the college stands for. The models body language is also very relaxed which shows that their is a relaxed atmosphere to the college which also promotes the college to be friendly. Due the model smiling it shows he is happy, which gives a good positive image to the college. The fact that the image also shows  the buildings in background almost shows of the college. Its shows a brief part of the college which also makes it look modern and updated. Another concept of the image is I brightened it so it would stand out more to the eye. The green stands out a lot and the colour green is often associated with money and money is made by success so I deliberately tried to make the green stand out more. The use of bright colours also makes the college look more cheerful and friendly towards the eye, the colours are also very young so they are suited to the target audience.
The layout to the front cover was very important it needed to look professional. I really liked the layout of the Lewish Ham college so I based mine on that. I placed my head mast to the top left hand side as then its the first thing you see as its at the top and you read from the left hand side. The issue number is on the top right hand corner, this  is so readers are aware of what issue it is and the dates. The sub-headings were the hardest part of the layout, due to my picture I didn't want to cover up the model or the Wyke building as I want readers to see them clearly. So i placed them on the left hand side near the bottom over parts of the image that weren't as important. Due to them being near the bottom its the last thing you read so you remember whats in the magazine and whats going on in that months issue so its the last piece of information the audience obtain.
The head-mast is very important as it will be on the cover every week. So its important that the font and colour looks good and suits the cover every week. I experimented with a number of fonts but the one I chose was readable, simple and would look good every week no matter what the picture would be on the front of the magazine. To make it more quirky and more youthful I put the word 'The' on a slant. All the other fonts are very simple to too and gives the front cover more sophistication, I tried different quirky fronts but it made the front cover looked cluttered. Due to my picture being so bright I didn't really want use a bright coloured font, so I used the two most simplest colours black and white. This also stood out really well against the bright background.
I really wanted my front page of the magazine to represent the college in a particular way, I really wanted it to show success, happiness and respect. The fact that the colours and fonts are very simple and sophisticated shows the maturity to the college. the building in the background shows the modernness to the college and the smiling model shows he is successful happy and full of respect and he's reading which shows the educational aspect. I think my magazine does work for the audience as its uses a young model from Wyke and it uses bright colours so its attractive to my audience.
I do believe I could of done better on my front cover of the magazine, I really wished I had took pictures in other areas of college because my picture may come out more successful also I think I should of put the Wyke logo on the college magazine so it would be easier for people to know which college the magazine is from. Apart from that I'm overall very happy with my result. I think it many similarities to the Lewish Ham magazine like the layout and fonts, however I believe mine looks more professional.

Draft of the Contents page

This is my draft of the Contents page, It will include two pictures, a title and the listing of the page numbers and titles of the pages. The tow images I will use will be of students round the college or images related to inside stories. The title will be bright and will stand out. The background colour of the Contents page will be a very simple colour so all the other things on the page will stand out to the audience. The contents page will be quite simple as its the first page of the magazine and its the navigator to the rest of the magazine.

Draft Two of the front cover

This is my second draft of the front cover.

Draft One of the front cover

This is my first draft for the front cover.

Possible names for my college magzine

All magazines need a title, so it is very important I have an appropriate friendly magazine title. I need something that is appropriate and catchy.

- Colmag: This is because I have used the word College and Magazine and combined them together to create a effective name for the magazine.
- The Term mag: The magazine will come out every term so I thought why not calling it the Term Mag
- The Shout Out: This is a good choice because it friendly towards young people not only that the magazine tells people whats happening so the title shows that its shouts out what is happening around the college.
- The WM: This is simple and quick and it stands for Wyke magazine.

comparing two college

I will now compare two front covers of a college magazine, this will inspire with mine and also pick up on things that I find don't look right on a college magazine. The two magazines I will compare are East Riding college magazine called 'Name?' and Lewisham college magazine which is call the  'The LC'.
Ill start with the Lewisham magazine 'The LC.' The language of the front cover is very precise to that off a professional magazine. The Head mast is in the top left hand corner, so its the first thing you see and recognise. It stands out as its in white and it doest take over the picture or the subtitles. This is good because people reading he magazine will instantly recognise it straight away. The image of the magazine is of a black person dressed in football kit, this promotes the collage for sport as well as education. And the sub heading is about the 'Dallas Cup' so the picture relates to the story inside the magazine. Also the magazine is from a collage in London where there is many cultures and ethnicity's, so using a black person on the front covers shows that multi-culture race and shows their not biased towards whites. The font of the head mast and the subheadings is very simple, however I personally think its too plain for the cover. However the font of the head mast and subheadings matches the colour of the college logo and the colours in the boys football kit. This makes the magazine look more professional as there isn't a wide range of colours going on which often makes magazines look tacky, cheap and very amature.
The audience of the magazine is the students and maybe teachers of the Lewis Ham college, so many people around the surrounding area may read the magazine as well if there interest in joining the college soon. The magazine is also aimed at younger students like ages 16 - 20. Also its aimed at males and females. The institution of the magazine is people who work in The Lewis Ham college as they make for other students as well.
The ideology of the magazine is to promote education and sport at the college. Not only that its about achievement, college life and respect for others at the college. This will be very similar to my college magazine, my magazine will represent achievement and respect for other students.
The representation of the magazine shows the person to be a very serious dedicated football player. He's not smiling and he has eye contact with the audience this shows his focus and determination. This represents the collage to be the same, that you will gain focus and determination. He is also shown with a football and a clean kit so its obvious he is staged for the photograph. This shows the collage is proud of his achievements and makes the readers of the magazine think that could be me one time. They also show his captain badge round his arm to show off his success at football.
Overall I think this is a very good front cover of a college magazine, it looks very professional and the photo is very suitable for the magazine as it promotes success and determination. However the font isn't that good it looks very cheap apart from that its very good. The colours all go well together and the whole concept of the front cover shows what the magazine stands for. I will now write about the other college magazine call 'Name?'
The next college magazine is called 'Name?' and its for the east riding college. The language of the east riding college i personally think isn't as good as the Lewis Ham college magazine. This is simply because it has no message behind it and its very bland. The head mast is centered at the top of the magazine, this is quite effective for a front cover of a mag zine as it stands out and its at the top so its the first thing you see. The image however I think doest sell the college very well, as its a picture of the college lit up on the night. Although this does make the college look very modern and expensive as its light up in friendly bight colours that appeal to younger audiences however, nobody goes to college that often on the night so not many people will see the college on the night also it only shows a small part of the college with no students so people don't really know what the college stands for or what its about. At the bottom of the front cover it has a small part of text which describes the courses at East Riding college. This is good for people who doesn't attend that college so if their interested in joining they can read it to find out details. However all the text and font on the front cover is the same. This makes it very plain and simple and makes it look like the makers of the magazine haven't put much effort into the magazine. The fact that the magazine is also called 'name' shows that they don't put much effort into the magazine.
Similarly to the Lewis Ham Magazine the audience will be students of the college. However I think the students may be a wider range of audiences simply because the front cover is very sophisticated and simple and because it has no pictures of 'Young' students on the front shows that it may be for older students as well as younger ones. I reckon the target audience is for 16-29 year old. The institution of the magazine is the same as the Lewish Ham magazine. Its made by students or staff of the college for other students and possible new students. This is simply because they have more input than an outsider of the college.
The ideology of the magazine is too sell the college, respect for the others and education. Much like the Lewish Ham magazine. However I think the Lewish Ham sells education and success better by the front cover partially due to the image used.
I don't think the representing on this magazine is as good as the Lewish Ham magazine, the image only shows the college to be modern and new. I don't think it really represents education or success as its only a picture of the building. Overall I think the Lewish Ham magazine is a lot more successfully as it shows more about the college and what it stands for. The 'Name?' magazine is very bland and simple but it looks more professional to the Lewish Ham magazine because there is less going. I personally think the Lewish Ham is the best front cover overall and it will help me with my front cover to my magazine more than the East riding of Yorkshire magazine.

outlining of The brief

I have been instructed to create a front page of a magazine and a contense page. The magazine however is a collage magazine and it must show of key concepts of the collage. The front cover must be appropriate for the collage. Along side creating the magazine I need planning and a evaluation of my finished product.
